Papers, ca. 1943-2002.

Contains a detailed memoir written by Gividen regarding his training and combat experience in the war. Describes, specifically, his interaction with other LDS servicemen and local church members during his training, and his gratitude in finding local church services to attend. Also includes an account of the maiden voyage of Gividen's B-17 en route to Europe in which he ascribes their survival, after a near-disastrous miscalculation, to divine intervention. Contains details of Gividen's second bombing mission in which his B-17 was shot down over Munich and crashed in Switzerland. He sustained serious head injuries which erased his memory of the crash altogether. Describes his rehabilitation in Switzerland and contact with other LDS church members there. Also includes details of his LDS mission to Houston and a later return trip to Switzerland, by local government invitation, to search for information regarding his crash. Also contains a manuscript written by Clayton Hurst, submitted for publication, detailing the account of Antoinette Spichtig, a Swiss news reporter, who covered Gividen's return trip and later joined the LDS church. Includes a memoir written by Clinton Norby, the engineer on Gividen's B-17, detailing the plane's crash, the crew's good treatment at the hands of Swiss soldiers, and their eventual return to the U.S.. Also Contains Gividen's journal of events transpiring after their crash in Switzerland describing his impressions of the locals, the soldiers, and their attitudes towards Americans. Photographs include four of Gividen: in full military dress, in flight gear, with his crew standing in front of his B-17, and standing with government officials from Muswangen, Switzerland during his return trip in 1982. Also contains two photographs of Gividen's wrecked B-17.
